Praise From A Professor and Mother.

"Dear Mr. Baker,
I wanted to write a simple fan letter to express my appreciation for your Nat Turner, which I think is an extraordinary work. I teach 19th century American and African American literature, as well as comics, so I was, needless to say, predisposed to love the book: indeed, I was able to share it with students (as well as my own children) this past semester when I taught antebellum American lit. I was able to put my admiration into prose in a review I wrote for an on-line critical magazine, guttergeek, and I wanted to share it with you:

Yours in admiration,
Beth Hewitt

Well, thank YOU, Prof. Hewitt! It's great to know that my book's being used by educators! My lovely wife is a teacher and mommy, and I think teachers and mothers are the most important people in the world!

Kyle and I went to a book release party for Larry Doyle's new novel I LOVE YOU BETH COOPER (Harper Collins) last night. Larry is a very funny writer: I stayed up past my bedtime reading it.

Larry's wife Becky is one of the nicest people I've ever met. When we moved to LA in 2002 she helped us with travel/moving logistics. We knew few families with small children in LA, but Becky included me and the kids in her playground playdates.

Evan Dorkin, who did cover art and illustrations for the novel, has info about tonight's NYC signing on his livejournal:

On Tuesday, May 15th, the McNally Robinson Booksellers in NYC will host an author/illustrator signing event for the book, taking place at 7:00 p.m.

You can buy the book here

After five decades, TALES FROM THE CRYPT – the comic, that is – is back. In June, is relaunching the legendary EC Comics horror anthology with two 20-page stories each bimonthly issue. PLASTIC MAN’s Kyle Baker provides the cover art for the first one; you can see preview pages here. As a fan of the original comic, the HBO series and the big-budget movies, this is good news to me.

The NEWSARAMA Interview

Benjamin Ong Pang Kean at Newsarama interviewed Kyle recently. Included is a whole lot of never-before-seen art from the next book: THE BAKERS: BABIES & KITTENS.

Here's an excerpt:
NRAMA: Any plans for The Bakers to meet up/crossover with other creations/characters?

KB: I plan to do a year-long miniseries which interconnects the storylines of every cartoon character I’ve ever created, from Cowboy Wally to Nat Turner, weaving my output of the last 20 years into a single cohesive universe which will become very dark, realistic and depressing as I kill off the less popular characters I don’t use any more. I’ll also kill off one of the more popular characters for a year, then bring him or her back to life in a different costume.

NRAMA: Again, a joke?

KB: You hope.

Rebecca Cathcart profiles Kyle Baker in a two-page cover story in the "Art & Lifestyles" section of Manhattan's THE VILLAGER.

Photographer Geoff Smith (we had to explain to the kids that a photographer named Geoff Smith was coming over, not Jeff Smith of BONE fame) was extremely sweet and patient, and took some beautiful photos.

Here is the photo Lillian had wanted published because our kitten Rosie was in it:

Family man

To create ‘The Bakers,’ a graphic novelist draws upon his life

By Rebecca Cathcart

Kyle Baker’s Chinatown office is the embodiment of his busy mind. A 30-inch computer monitor erupts from a mountain of paper strewn across his desk. Bookshelves border the room, the frayed spines of old comics and reference materials peering at the clutter below. “I know this looks like chaos,” Baker says on a recent afternoon, nearly knocking over a gigantic paper cup filled to the brim with loose change. “But it makes sense to me.” He stands at the eye of the storm, calm and steady as the church bell chiming through two open windows. His thick dreadlocks hang down the back of his orange and brown flannel shirt. He grips a can of “Rock Star” energy drink, fuel for his frequent all-nighters.
